Switchboards are the highest-capacity systems among the family of low-voltage distribution and protection devices. They are typically floor mounted, rated for current levels of 1,200 to 6,000 amperes, and voltages below 600 VAC.
The NEC defines a switchboard as a large single-panel frame, or assembly of panels on which switches, overcurrent and other protective devices, buses and instruments are mounted. Switchboards are generally accessible from the rear as well as the front and are not intended to be installed in cabinets.
Switchboards combine switches, circuit breakers and other overcurrent protection devices, buses and instruments in a single framework.
