Computer Equipment Sensitive To Power Quality And Continuity
The utility supplying power is concerned about the quality of power being
supplied and the continuity of that power. This shall be discussed in detail in
another section. The importance of quality and continuity of power depends
somewhat upon the kind of equipment. These can be grouped as follows:
A. Main-Frame Computers
- Real-Time Systems: Reservation systems used by hospitals, hotels, air lines,
security systems, library "card" catalogs, government functions, poison
hotline, etc.;
- Non-Real-Time Systems: Batch processing of data, scheduled-usage, most
educational, law, insurance and accounting services, etc.;
- Some telephone systems.
B. Smaller Devices: Micro-Processors or Mini-Computers
- Office systems: accounting
- Personal computers, including engineering and scientific uses
- Process controllers
- Computer-aided design systems
- Proprietary telephone systems
- Business applications: cash register and central inventory control;
accounting and cost control
- Building system monitoring and control
- Building security and fire alarm
- Medical laboratory analysis
- Numerical control of machine tools
- Non-real-time data storage and retrieval
