Fundamentals Of Power Factor

Power factor is defined as the ratio of working power (kW) to apparent power (kVA). It is a measure of how effectively electrical power is being used. In a linear or sinusoidal system, the result is also referred to as the cosine Ø.

For example, if a boring mill operated at 100 kW and the apparent power was 125 kVa, divide 100 by 125 to calculate the power factor of 0.80.

Note: Power factor in a non-linear environment does not follow these formulas or tables without filters or chokes installed on the harmonic generators.
