Nema Code Letters

Table 430-7(b) lists the NEMA code letters indicating the motor's kVA current draw from a source at rated voltage during starting. The values in this table can be used to determine the branch circuit short-circuit protection settings in accordance with Article 430-52 and Table 430-152. Correct design should have quick acting short-circuit protection yet let the motor draw appropriate inrush current during acceleration to operating speed. Therefore, the short-circuit current trip level must be set above these starting current levels.
