What Is Higher Motor Efficiency Worth?

The following chart demonstrates the substantial savings in annual operating costs that can be realized by utilizing a standard motor and a higher efficiency motor. For purposes of illustration, we have used a set of circumstances in which motor sizes range from 15 to 200 hp, the duty cycle is 4,000 hours per year, and the price for electricity is assumed to be 6 cents per kilowatt-hour. Savings shown represent the differences in operating costs between standard motors and two lines of energy-efficient motors.

As can be seen from the chart, a 75 hp energy efficient standard motor saves approximately $350 a year in power costs as compared with an equivalent standard model. Savings realized by a 200 hp high efficiency motor are even greater, amounting to about $1,157 a year.
