THE POSITION
The Manager Safety, Environment and Sustainability is responsible for developing safety and environmental strategies, policies, programs and practices under an ISO framework in support of regulatory requirements, stakeholder expectations and strategic business objectives. The Manager identifies safety and environmental risks and develops operational procedures and controls to mitigate impacts. The position formulates annual performance objectives, reports on performance on a regular basis to the Executive Leadership Team and the Board of Directors, and develops monitoring, measurement and audit programs to ensure BCTC and its service providers comply with environmental and safety performance requirements.
The position provides advice, expertise and support for avoiding, mitigating and remediating environmental and safety impacts, and develops training and communication strategies and programs to heighten awareness and provide skills and knowledge to BCTC and service provider staff. The position manages the development, implementation, maintenance and enhancement of the environmental and safety management systems. The position represents BCTC in relations with regulatory agencies and stakeholders, and liaises with other organizations and associations in conducting benchmarking and other related initiatives.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Bachelor Degree in the life sciences or other relevant discipline.
Experience Factors
· Significant experience in the planning, development and implementation of safety, environmental and sustainability strategies and programs, preferably for a large utility
· Excellent knowledge of the philosophies, principles and practices related to safety and environment management
· Excellent knowledge of safety and environmental regulations, standards and processes and new/emerging trends and developments
· Knowledge of and experience in working with regulatory agencies
· Ability to manage safety and environment planning, program development and implementation in meeting BCTC’s business requirements and regulatory and stakeholder expectations
· Ability to think conceptually, anticipate and assess complex issues, and balance competing priorities to reach optimal decisions
· Ability to provide leadership and advice regarding the effective planning and management of safety and environmental strategies and work collaboratively and cooperatively within the management team and with cross functional teams
· Well developed planning, organizational, project management, analytical, problem solving and decision making skills
· Well developed oral and written communication, presentation, facilitation, leadership, change management, relationship management and interpersonal skills
· Strong business acumen and ability to champion change
· Ability to manage time and resources effectively in order to reduce costs, improve benefits and achieve required results.
